S, T and R in a construction such as S31 T11N R12W = section, township and range according to the Federal System of Rectangular Surveys. The townships are squares six miles on a side numbered vertically starting from a designated base line. Ranges are also squares six miles on a side showing locations east and west of a designated principal meridian. Thus T11N R12E designates the township which begins 66 miles (=11x 6 miles )north of the base line and 72 miles (=12 x 6 miles) east of the designated principal meridian. Each square six miles on a side is divided into 36 numbered sections of one square mile each. (The E, W, N and S may be omitted if there is no ambiguity.) The conventional two-letter abbreviations are used for the fifty states of the Union. Meanings for widely used abbreviations such as N. B., ibid. , op. cit. , and q.v. , may be found in any unabridged dictionary of the English language. |
