The Children of Henry and Elizabeth Branscomb: Asa Martin Branscomb
Please check the Author's Notes for an explanation of the numbering system I use for identifying individuals within any family.
The line of descent for Asa Martin Branscomb is:
4. Asa Martin Branscomb (“Mart”)
Mart was born ca. 1836 (?) in Kentucky; md. in Putnam County 24 February 1867 Nancy Followell (Book 1, p. 379; the marriage records show her surname as “Fallow”). The 1870 census for Elm Township, Putnam County, has this entry on p 225 (dwelling #4):

The age of 30 is not consistent with the records of the 1850 census, where the (implied) birth year was 1836; the 1880 census was again inconsistent, showing a birth year of 1844. In 1850 and 1870 the birthplace was listed as Kentucky, but the 1880 record says Missouri. Virgil Branscomb (#736) told about an uncle who lost a leg in the Civil War. According to Virgil, the uncle and his wife lived on Sally Mountain in the Chariton River Valley, and they gathered willow branches to weave baskets for sale. Virgil probably referred to his great-uncle Mart, who lost a leg, and who is identified in this census as a basketmaker.
By the time of the 1880 census there were four children (p. 442A, dwelling #78):

The marriage book (#3, p. 73) shows that Doshia V. Branscomb md. 4 August 1894 Charles M. Dahlman.
The Pearl Branscomb, age 16, who was in the household of Daniel and Sarah at the time of the 1900 census, possibly was a daughter of Asa Martin Branscom and Nancy Followell.
Ted Hogue found two official documents from Putnam County concerning this family. This document is from the county court records; the date is missing:
#1453 State of Missouri
Indictment for Selling Liquor
Martin Branscomb, defendant
Now this day comes the attorney who prosecutes in this behalf as well as the defendent by his attorney, and the defendent by his attorney files his petition to commute the fine of Forty dollars assessed against him in this cause to a limited time of imprisonment in the County jail of this County. It is therefore ordered by the Court that the said defendent be sentenced to ten days imprisonment.
The second record is from the register of births in Putnam County, Roll Number C5578, Page 67, Number 2508: Sarah Ellen Branscomb, age 22, gave birth in Unionville on 16 March 1891 to a male child, her first. The father was “Joseph Shotes said to be,” age 25, farmer. The attendant physician was W. W. Williams. The child was not named. Although it is not definite that Sarah Ellen was the daughter of Mart and Nancy Branscomb, her name and age match that of the mother as stated in the birth register. Marjorie Warren suggests that Joseph “Shotes” was actually a Choate.
