The Children of Henry and Elizabeth Branscomb: John Harrison Branscomb
Please check the Author's Notes for an explanation of the numbering system I use for identifying individuals within any family.
The line of descent for John Harrison Branscomb is:
3. John Harrison Branscomb
John was born 23 February 1834 in Wayne County He died 1 January 1913 and was buried at. Pleasant Ridge Cem., Joy, White County, Ark. He married in Macon County, Mo., 11 January 1852 Sarah Ann Brown (b. 4 March 1831 in Grayson Co, Ky.; d. of dropsy 3 July 1896 according to the cemetery record or 1897 according to the family genealogical record. Bur. Pleasant Home Cem., Putnam County). Sarah was the daughter of William Brown and Elizabeth Hornback. Some confusion exists concerning the marriage records for John and Sarah: The records of Maude Branscomb and of #32C Mary Etta Badgely give the date as 4 December 1851. Also, apparently a second marriage record in the county names the bride as Eliza Brown.
John was in his parents’ household at the time of the 1850 census. In 1860 he and his family were in nearby “Shugar” Creek Township, Randolph County (dwelling #1160, p. 974):

Deed Book 29, p. 58, has two records for deeds which were filed jointly on 2 May 1887: James M. Brasfield to John H. Branscom, 31 October 1885, 10 acres, and (2) John J. Ewing to John H. Branscom, 28 April 1887, for 10 adjoining acres.
These data are known for the children of John and Sarah:
- 31. Mary Elizabeth Branscomb, b. November 1854 in Macon County; md. in Putnam County 2 January 1872 Lowell D. Teter (b. June 1846 Ohio, d. between 1910 and November 1918). Lowell was the s/o David Teter, as shown by the 1880 census. That census shows Lowell and Mary with three children and Lowell’s father in Buffalo Township, Cloud County, Kan., p.194B. In 1900 the family was in Perkins Township of Payne County, Okla., dwelling #10. The 1910 census found Lowell and Mary and one grandson in Costilla County, Colo., dwelling #151, living near their daughter Alice. Prior to 1918 Lowell died, and apparently Mary moved back to Perkins Township of Payne County, Okla. There, on 21 November 1918, Mary was married, by the minister of the Baptist Church, to #32 Lewis Woodson Campbell, whose wife Sarah (sister of Mary Elizabeth) had died. The marriage lasted only briefly. On 29 September 1919 Mary Elizabeth Teter Campbell filed an affidavit stating that Lewis had deserted her on 25 February of that year, “without cause or any knowledge or advice of his intent to abandon her took leave while she was absent from their home for a short time visiting her daughter.” The 1920 census showed Mary E. as a widow living alone in dwelling #2 of Payne County; Lewis appears to have returned to Putnam County, Mo., and his obituary does not mention this brief marriage. In 1930 Mary Elizabeth was living with the family of her daughter Emma in Payne County (Dwelling #87).
Lowell became the Treasurer for Payne County on 24 September 1894.
Lowell and Mary E. had nine children, of whom two died before the 1900 census was taken. The names of the two who died are unknown, and they are not numbered. Two other children are known only because their names appeared in the 1900 census. The children:
- 311. Henry Monroe Teter, b. 14 April 1874 in Putnam County, d. 30 July 1944 in Los Angeles County, Calif.. The name of his first wife is unknown; he md. (2) in Payne County, Okla., 18 August 1898 Minnie Romaine Miller (b. 8 April 1878 Kan., d. 6 June 1952 in Los Angeles). Minnie was the d/o Thomas E. Miller. The 1900 census for Perkins Township, Payne County, Okla., shows Henry and Minnie in dwelling #14 with two children. In 1910 they were in dwelling #342 of Stillwater Co; in 1920 they were in Tulsa, dwelling #17; and by 1930 they had moved to Los Angeles, where the census (dwelling #102) showed them residing at 949 North Hudson Avenue. The children of Henry M. and Minnie were Floyd Alvin, Hazel, Ray, Ruth C., Harley E., and Lowell T.
- 312. Alice A. Teter (Allie), b. June 1876 in Putnam County, d. in Los Angeles. Md. ca 1894 Charles Columbus Todd (b. 29 January 1864 Ill., d. 27 March 1952 in Los Angeles). In 1900 Charles C. and Allie A. were in dwelling #72 of Sapulpa, Creek Nation, Oklahoma. In 1910 they were in dwelling #146 of Garland Township, Costilla County, Colo.; Allie’s parents were in dwelling #151. In 1920 Charles and Alice were in dwelling #120 of Garrett Township, Johnston County, Okla., and by 1930 they had moved to Los Angeles, where the census shows them in dwelling #199 of Los Angeles Township. The various censuses show Charles as a stock dealer or stockman until 1930, when at age 64 he was a laborer in a creamery. The children of Charles and Allie were Jessie Edna (d. y), Lois G. and Audrey Crestone.
- 313. John Wesley Teter, b.15 August 1878 in Putnam County, d. in Oklahoma City, Okla.. Md. in Okla. ca. 1902 Minnie A. Dysart (b. 30 November 1879 Mo., d. February 1976 in Oklahoma City. Minnie’s mother was named Salina (1920 census). The 1900 census for Payne County, Okla., showed John and a partner in dwelling #310 of Glenco Township. John was listed as a cashier in a bank. In later censuses he was a “banker” and then vice president of a bank. In 1910 John W. and Minnie A. were in Bristow Township of Creek Co, Okla., dwelling #56; in 1920 in Oklahoma Township of Oklahoma Co (1312-23-27), and in 1930 in Oklahoma City (326-44-44). They had one child, Glennis (female), born after ca. 16 years of marriage.
- 314. David Clarence Teter, b. 6 July 1880 in Cloud County,Kan., d. 17 December 1966 in Glendale, Los Angeles County, Calif.. Md. in Okla. ca. 1904 Edna Frances Means, b. 25 July 1880 Kan. Edna was the d/o John Means and Lucinda Riley. In 1910 David C. and Edna were in Tishomingo Township of Johnston County, Okla., dwelling #131, and in 1920 they were in Tishomingo City, dwelling #364. The children born to them through 1920 were Mildred E. and John W.
- 315. Charles E. Teter, b. July 1883 Kan.; was 17 years old at the time of the 1900 census. Nothing further is known for him.
- 316. Una O. Teter, b. April 1887 Kan.; was 13 years old at the time of the 1900 census. Nothing further is known for her.
- 317. Emma A. Teter, b. February 1892 Okla. Md. in Okla. ca. 1908 Ralph L. Dickey (b. 20 March 1889 in Mount Era, IL) The 1920 census for Perkins Township of Payne County, Okla., shows the family in dwelling #19, and in 1930 they were in dwelling #87. In 1920 Ralph’s occupation was given as “barber.” The children of Ralph and Emma were Maxine, Winona, Juanita, Ralph N. and John S. Emma’s widowed mother Mary E. was a member of the household in 1930.
(All of the information for the family of Mary E. Branscomb and Lowell D. Teter was sent to me by Carolyn Canida.)
- 32. Sarah Francis Branscomb, b. 24 February 1854, d. 9 November 1910; md. 21 June 1869 in Macon County Lewis Woodson Campbell (b. in Randolph County 31 July 1846, d. of pneumonia in Worthington , Putnam County, 4 June 1933); both bur. Pleasant Home Cem. Lewis was the s/o Martin Cashion Campbell and Elizabeth Hudson. The death certificate for Lewis stated that he suffered from senile dementia; according to his application for a pension, he also suffered from arteriosclerosis. During the Civil War Lewis served as a private in the 42nd Regiment of Missouri Volunteers, being mustered in on 20 September 1864 and mustered out on 25 June 1865. After Sarah died Lewis married her widowed sister #31 Mary Elizabeth Teter; see further under the heading for her.
The entries in Sarah’s handwriting in the family Bible show twelve children, six of whom are shown in the records for Pleasant Home Cem. At the time of the 1880 census Lewis and Sarah were living in dwelling #82 next door to Sarah’s sister Joanna Minick and her family; next door to Joanna were their parents John H. and Sarah Branscomb.

- 33. Joseph F. Branscomb, d. y.(Reported only by Maud Branscomb.)
- 34. Almeda Jane Branscomb, d. y. (Reported only by Maud Branscomb.)
- 35. Joanna Branscomb, b. 13 March 1860, d. 25 March 1889; md. John W. Minnic/Minnick. At the time of the 1880 census John and Joanna were in dwelling #81 and next door to Joanna’s parents. Both John and Joanna were 19 years of age, and their son Wm. Lawance [sic] was one year old. The next item for John and Joanna, nine years later, comes from the estate records for Putnam County (Phillips, p. 74). Evidently two packets of probate records were filed: #544 filed 12 October 1889 and #548 filed 3 May 1889. Joanna’s father John Branscomb gave the data which appeared in the earlier file: both William and Joanna Minick had died, leaving four children as heirs. The children:
- 351. William Lawrence Minic, b. 11 January 1879, d. 22 October 1913 in Putnam County Md. 2 August 1901 Ollie Gertrude Haynes.
- 352. Edward Francis Minnix (“Frank”), b. 18 January (?) or 9 October (?)1881, d. 29 October 1913 in an accident in a coal mine. Md. 21 September 1904 Polly Ann Haynes,(b. 20 October 1886, d. 1 May 1977; bur. Pleasant Home Cem.). Polly was the daughter of William M. Haynes and Emaline Glaspie. Frank and Polly had one son, George.
- 353. Ida Bell Minic, b. 10 November 1883, d. in Monnet, Mo., 7 March 1959. Md. (1) James Paris Blodgett (b. 18 December 1879 [1871?], d. 12 July 1964; bur. Pleasant Home Cem.) Md.(2) Sig Marx (It is not certain which marriage came first, but since James married #3520 Polly Ann Haynes prior to 1932 and had three children by her, he was probably Ida Bell’s first husband.)
- 354. Robert Arthur Minnick, b. 1885; d. y. He was not listed as an heir in the estate papers for his parents.
- 355. Luther David Minnick, b. 9 April 1888 in Keytesville, Chariton County, Mo., d. 8 January 1957 in Appanoose Co, Iowa. Bonnie E. was the daughter of George W. Bramhall and Adda Belle Kearns. The children of Luther and Bonnie were Homer Arcene, Valda Belle, Flora Leola, Fanchen Jean and Clella Joan.
(Information for Joanna’s family principally from Michael Minic.)
- 36. John Thomas Branscomb, b. 6 September 1862, d. 14 July 1942. Md. (1) in Putnam County 15 November 1885 Phoebe Hale; md (2) 17 October 1900 Nora Dell Ray (b. 22 March 1884, d. 25 October 1952). Nora was the d/o John H. Ray and Martha Ann Gilstrap of Graysville. The cemetery records for Putnam County show Phebe Branscom, daughter of J. T., b. 14 December 1889, d. 12 September 1895; bur. Cain Ford Cem., Elm Township. The fate of Phoebe the mother is unknown, but John remarried just ten months after Pheby the daughter was born, so it is a good guess that she died as a result of childbirth. A deed dated 9 July 1886 from Lewis Campbell -- surely the husband of #32 Sarah -- to J. T Branscom was in Book 7, p. 50.
(Despite all of the correspondence I had with Maude Branscomb prior to her death, I do not have a list from her of her husband Terry Ray’s siblings. However, her correspondence confirms that she provided the information which CEB published concerning the family of #36 John Thomas Branscomb and Nora Dell Ray. Daughter Phebe and any other children who may have been born to John’s first wife Phoebe are unnumbered. A child of Terry and Maude confirmed the items in Roman type below for John Thomas’s children. Entries in italics for those children are not confirmed independently.)
- 361. Jessie Geneva Branscomb, Md. Bob Strubble and Jo St. John.
- 362. Bert H. Branscomb, b. 1901; md. 1923 Alpha Lee Mathews. One child was Calvin Howard.
- 363. Boyd O. Branscomb, b. 13 December 1902; md. 1925 Lillian Allen (b. 12 January 1908). Their children were Louie Arthur, Martha Jane and Hardy King.
- 364. Carl Branscomb, b. 1904. Did not marry.
- 365. Raphael Branscomb, b.1908
- 366. June Alberta Branscomb, b. 1910; md. 1928 Clifton Slaten.
- 367. Julia Ann Branscomb, b. 1912; md. Oscar Lindsey.
- 368. Lowell Dee Branscomb, b. 1914; md. Catherine Gerbert.
- 369. Lorene May Branscomb, b. 1914; md. Woodyard Hoffman.
- 36A. (=10) Terry Ray Branscomb, b. 13 April 1919, d. 20 July 2000 in Washington State. Md. 1940 Maude A. Shelton (b. 4 July 1923, d. 26 September 1990 in Deming, NM.); both bur. Deming Cem. Two children: Dale R. and Nina E.
- 36B. (=11) Geraldine Branscomb, b. 1922; md. 1937 Glenwood Giles
- 36C. (=12) Thelma Dale Branscomb, md. (1?)Hershell Anderson and (2?) Howard Bolton
- 37. Martha Isabelle/Isabella Branscomb, b. 10 April 1865, d. 1 September 1907. Md. James J. Whitworth (1861-1925). Both bur. Pleasant Home Cem. I found James J. Whitworth, age 42 and his wife “Pulina,” age 39, both b. Mo., in the 1880 census for Elm Township, of Putnam County, dwelling #41. They were probably the parents of the James J. who married Isabelle. I did not find James Jr. CEB lists the following children with varying differences in spelling. The cemetery book confirms the dates but not the parentage for some of them. If no records are found in the cemetery book, the entries are in italics to show that CEB is the source:
- 371. Edna Whitworth, md. Grey Cowan
- 372. Jesse Harris Whitworth, b. 17 December 1886, d. 16 September 1940; md. 1980 Verna E. Rhodes (b. 1891, d. 1970/71); both bur. Pleasant Home Cem.

Anise May was the d/o John William Wood and Rebecca Jett of Worthington. James and Anise lived in Worthington. The 1900 census lists them in Elm Township, dwelling #135; in 1910 they were in dwelling #6; in 1920 they were in dwelling #79. Five children:
- 381. Alice L. Branscom, b. October 1889 d. October 1895, bur, Pleasant Home Cem., next to the graves of James Ambrose Branscom and his wife Anise May Wood.

DOB and DOD for both are from California death records. Barney served as tax assessor for Elm Township of Putnam County for four years. By 1930 Barney and family had moved to Polk Co, Iowa, where the census shows them in Dwelling #176 of Jefferson Township; Barney’s second cousin #712 Lela Hatfield and her family were nearby. Circa 1953 Barney and Anna moved to Long Beach. After Anna died, Barney md. (2) in Long Beach on 15 October 1957 Mrs. May Robinson. Barney and Anna had three children; the 1930 census names them as Royce, Lowell and Freeman.

- 385. Norma Branscomb, b. ca. 1911, md. 27 July 1928 Murl Forest Croft (1910-1980?); both bur. Unionville Cem. The obituary for Anise May stated that she was residing in Norma’s home at the time of her death. The obituary also named one Croft grandchild, Jayce.
