The Children of Henry and Elizabeth Branscomb:
Malinda Branscomb

Please check the Author's Notes for an explanation of the numbering system I use for identifying individuals within any family.

The line of descent for Malinda Branscomb:

1. Malinda Branscomb

Malinda was b. ca. 1828 in Wayne County, Ky. Md. in Macon County, Mo., 23 December 1842 David Vestal. The 1850 census for Macon County shows David Vestal and family in dwelling #526, p. 156, next door to their siblings William Vestal and Charlotte Branscomb Vestal in dwelling #525:

  Age Where born
David Vestal 33 Ky.
Malvina 22 Ky. (This is Malinda)
John 5 Mo.
Margaret E. 2 Mo.

Numerous other Vestals were nearby, including James, Jacob, Johnson, Claiborne and another William (see further under #2 Charlotte).

The 1860 census for East Chariton Township, Macon County, shows the family of David “Vestel” on p. 298, dwelling # 958. The post office was College Mound. All the residents were listed as b. Kentucky:

  Age
Vestal, D. 38 F. L. (farm laborer) The second digit of the age is indefinite.
Melissa 31 (This is Malinda)
John 15
Margret 13
Sarah 10
Rebecca 6
Mary 3

Despite the variation in names and the statement that the children were born in Ky., this is obviously the family of David and Malinda.

Prior to 1870 David and his family moved to Elm Township of Putnam County. The 1870 census recorded them in dwelling #294, p. 243:

Age Sex Where born (Probable identities)

M. 40 F Ky. Malinda
R. 16 F Mo. Rebecca
M. 14 F Mo. Mary
A.E. 12 F Mo.
R. 10 F Mo.
C.A.(?) 5 F Mo.
S. 2 F Mo. Armilda? (said to be born ca. 1868)

The probate file for David Vestal is dated 8 November 1880, and it names Malinda as his widow (Phillips, p. 121, #1248). The 1880 census for Elm Township, Putnam County, shows Malinda as a widow, age 50 (p. 455, dwelling 325).

Gail McDowell provides a partial list of children for David and Malinda:
